About Rainshadow Permaculture
Hi, I’m Victoria and I created Rainshadow Permaculture. If you’ve ever asked yourself the following questions:
How can I create an abundant life in a world that often seems hopeless?
How can we live in harmony with the earth while still meeting our needs?
What are some effective techniques for growing healthy, organic food?
How can I incorporate permaculture principles into my existing garden or farm?
Then you’re in the right place!!
Throughout my life, I have deeply struggled with these questions, coming of age in a world with environmental destruction, economic and racial inequality, and the pervasive industrialization of nearly every aspect of human existence. After years of working in various fields and becoming anxious and depressed, I realized that I wanted to use my skills and knowledge in a way that made me feel as good as when I was out in the garden. That’s when I discovered permaculture, a design system that offers a holistic and regenerative approach to creating sustainable ecosystems.
I was immediately drawn to permaculture's principles of working with nature, minimizing waste, and creating abundance. I completed my permaculture certification and started designing and implementing landscapes that were not only productive but also beautiful. As I worked with clients and saw the transformation that permaculture could bring to their lives and landscapes, I knew that I wanted to share this knowledge with more people. That's why I founded Rainshadow Permaculture, to help others learn how to create regenerative ecosystems in their own communities.
Through my landscape design services, courses and toolkits, and writing services, I aim to empower people to live closer to nature and build a more sustainable future. Join me!
About Me
Growing up, several of my family members had a love for gardening. My Grandma and Papa, who lived next door to us, converted half of an acre into a large organic garden and grew over 30 apple, pear, and peach trees. Gardening came naturally to me, and from the moment I planted my first seed, I knew that there was something special about working with the earth and watching new life sprout. The old-growth forests of Washington and the Olympic rain shadow only intensified this sense of awe in me, sparking a curiosity to understand landscapes and the interconnectedness of life.
Landscape design has been a way to bring this curiosity to fruition, as I now specialize in residential, homestead, and small-scale farm regenerative designs. In my free time, you can find me out in the garden, with my family and our two cats Kirby and Mila, or searching for mushrooms somewhere on the Olympic Peninsula.
What is Permaculture?
Permaculture is a sustainable design system focused on forming a harmonious relationship between people, plants, animals, and soil. The term “permaculture” was first coined in 1978 by Australian ecologist David Holmgren and environmental psychology professor Bill Mollison as an amalgamation of "permanent” and “agriculture," and it has since evolved to also connote "permanent culture."
Permaculture is meant to be a holistic approach to land design that works on not only restoring damaged land but also creating systems that provide for human needs indefinitely without destroying the earth's natural systems, instead working with them. Permaculture can be applied at any scale, from a small garden all the way up to a multi-hundred-acre community development or farming project..
